Making Genealogy in Late Imperial China: A Case Study of Xu Village in Huizhou

This presentation demonstrates an analysis of the Xu genealogies in Xu village, located in the Huizhou 徽州 region, spanning from the 16th to the 19th century. It identifies three distinct phenomena in the genealogical compilation of Xucun:

the correlation of ancestors with mythological figures dating back 4,000 years;
the linkage of ancestors’ names to officials bearing the same family name as documented in historical records; and
the inconsistencies between the records and descriptions of ancestors in the genealogical contents compared to those in broader historical records.
These phenomena underscore the notion that genealogy itself serves as a symbolic capital of regional identity.
